About
Puerto Rico Pathfinder

A clearer path to life and discovery in Puerto Rico.

There is so much to discover about Puerto Rico.

Some of it is practical: figuring out how things work, finding the right resources, understanding everyday systems, or navigating the challenges of island life.

Some of it is simply fascinating: a forgotten piece of history, an unusual place, a local tradition, an old photograph, or a story that sends you down an unexpected research rabbit hole.

Puerto Rico Pathfinder exists for both.

My connection to Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico has been part of my life for as long as I can remember.

My mother is Puerto Rican, and growing up, our family visited the island every year. Some of my favorite childhood memories are of spending vacations with my cousins, celebrating Three Kings Day, and enjoying long summer days at the beach.

Spanish was always part of our family life, too. My mother and grandparents sometimes used it as their “secret language” for adult conversations. Although I grew up around Spanish and became proficient in it, I never developed native fluency. English has always been the language I’m most comfortable using.

When I got married in my early twenties, my husband and I decided to make Puerto Rico our home.

More than 20 years later, we’re still here—and I’m still discovering new things about the island.

Learning to navigate island life

Even with my family connections and years of childhood visits, making Puerto Rico our home came with a learning curve.

The language barrier was part of it, but so was figuring out how everyday things worked. Finding reliable practical information, understanding government processes, locating services, and knowing where to turn for answers weren’t always straightforward.

Often, the information existed. It just wasn’t easy to find, especially in English.

Over time, through experience, research, and plenty of trial and error, I became more familiar with the systems and resources that make everyday life work.

That experience planted one of the seeds for Puerto Rico Pathfinder: the idea that useful information about living here could be easier to find, understand, and navigate.

But the practical side of island life is only part of my story.

A curiosity that keeps growing

Over the years, my family and I have explored Puerto Rico extensively, often following whatever subject happened to capture my interest.

At one point, we spent roughly three months of weekends visiting historic sugar mills across the island. Then came lighthouses. Then lakes. And eventually, one curiosity led to another.

What started as a weekend outing often became a much deeper research project: digging into old documents, learning about the history of a place, making connections, and uncovering stories I hadn’t known existed.

My professional life also gave me opportunities to experience Puerto Rico from different perspectives.

Some of my work took me into the island’s ecology and environment, deepening my interest in its landscapes, ecosystems, and natural history.

I also spent more than a decade working with local artisans and artistic representations of Puerto Rican culture. That experience gave me a deeper appreciation for the creativity, craftsmanship, and traditions behind Puerto Rican art. I even became a FOMENTO-certified artisan myself.

All of these experiences fueled my curiosity and gave me even more things to explore.

Giving years of research a home

Somewhere along the way, I became a collector of information.

Articles, historical documents, photographs, interesting discoveries, practical resources, old references, bookmarked websites, and countless notes accumulated across folders and hard drives.

Some of that research goes back more than 20 years.

I’ve always loved following an interesting question, digging into the details, and connecting pieces of information that don’t always seem related at first.

Eventually, I realized I wanted to do more than keep collecting things. I wanted to give that research a home, make it easier to explore, and share what I’ve learned with others.

That’s how Puerto Rico Pathfinder began.

Part practical guide. Part discovery journal.

Puerto Rico Pathfinder brings together two things I care about: making useful information easier to find and sharing the stories that make Puerto Rico such an interesting place.

Live Here is about the practical side of island life. It brings together resources for people moving to Puerto Rico, returning home after time away, staying for an extended period, or simply trying to navigate everyday life.

Discover Here follows curiosity. It’s where you’ll find lesser-known history, unusual places, interesting research, and stories that deserve a closer look.

Love Here celebrates Puerto Rico’s culture, traditions, communities, and everyday experiences, with an appreciation for the history and people behind them.

Not everything here is designed to solve a problem. Sometimes a story is worth telling simply because it’s interesting.

And not everything requires a deep dive into history. Sometimes you just need to know where to start.

Both have a place here.

An English-first resource, rooted in respect

Puerto Rico has a rich history, distinct identity, vibrant culture, and deep connections that extend well beyond the island.

There is also a tremendous amount of valuable information that can be difficult to discover, scattered across different sources, or available primarily in Spanish.

My own experiences have shaped why I wanted to create an English-first resource. Even after more than two decades of living here, English remains the language I’m most comfortable using, and I know how valuable it can be to have clear explanations and accessible starting points.

Puerto Rico Pathfinder aims to make information easier to discover in English while pointing readers back to original sources, local institutions, Puerto Rican voices, and Spanish-language resources.

Being English-first doesn’t mean treating English as the default language of Puerto Rico. It means making information easier to navigate for readers who benefit from an English-language starting point.

The goal isn’t to redefine Puerto Rico or suggest the island needs to become something different.

It’s to encourage curiosity, understanding, and appreciation for Puerto Rico as it is.

Research, sources, and a little humility

I’m an enthusiastic researcher, but I don’t claim to be an authority on every subject covered here.

I draw on historical materials, official publications, local sources, personal observations, professional experiences, and years of collected research. I also use AI-assisted tools to help organize information, explore connections, and develop content.

I aim to check important facts, credit original sources, and provide links for further reading. But research is rarely perfect. Some historical records are incomplete, different accounts may conflict, and practical information can change.

When something is uncertain, I want to acknowledge it. When something is wrong, I want to correct it.

I also hope readers will explore beyond these pages, consult original sources, and share information that adds depth or a different perspective.

An independent project with a purpose

Puerto Rico Pathfinder is a personal passion project and an independent publishing venture.

Some resources may include affiliate links, advertising, or optional paid downloads. These help support the time and costs involved in building and maintaining the site.

But not every story needs to earn money, and not every recommendation needs a commercial connection.

The guiding idea is simple: create something genuinely worth reading, using, and sharing. If it can also become a sustainable small business, all the better.

Keep exploring

Whether you’re planning a move, returning to Puerto Rico, settling into daily life, researching a piece of history, or simply following your curiosity, I hope you find something valuable here.

Maybe it’s the answer you needed.

Maybe it’s a story you’ve never heard.

Or maybe it’s the beginning of a question you didn’t know you wanted to ask.
